Erin just purchased a new car which gets 49 miles per gallon on highway roads and 45 miles per gallon on city roads. If, in a week, Erin used a total of 12 gallons of gas for a total of 560 miles, how many miles did she travel on highway roads and how many miles did she travel on city roads?

 

let gas used on highways =x, and city =y

x+y=12

49x+45y=560

 

x=5 gallons

y=7 gallons

 

miles travelled on highways= 49(5)= 245 miles

miles travelled on city ways= 45(7)= 315 miles
